The most fantastic Marvel film as of yet is basically Marvel’s version of Star Wars. I mean, lets break it down. You’ve got the young human, the outlaws, one of which is a wisecracking, witty character, and the other is the muscle, who can’t really speak much at all. Then there’s the princess character. The daughter of the film’s main villain. It all ends in the group going and blowing up the bad guys spaceship to stop it from blowing up a whole planet. It mirrors Star Wars in so many ways, but to be honest, I think I like Guardians of the Galaxy better than Star Wars. This movie is incredible, and even though I was expecting it to be good, I was still surprised when it turned out to be that good. Yes, it does follow the formula behind Star Wars but it feels so original. It feels like the first space opera of it’s kind. Probably because it’s plot wasn’t even it’s strongest part of the film. Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t just another film, it did tons of things that many other fantasy films never dared to do. It balances the tone perfectly, it had me close to tears in the beginning and end, it was unusually emotional for a big Marvel studios film. But mainly, the tone balances perfectly between comic and serious when it needs to be. One of the biggest problems I’ve found with Marvel movies (cough Iron Man 3), is that the tone always bounces too inconsistently between comedy and drama. Guardians always felt like the tone was right in it’s scene. Then there’s the brilliant soundtrack. Which reaches the nostalgia audience, and introduces kids to some good rock classics. It feels like every Marvel movie needs to have a modern soundtrack that kids will immediately recognize. But Guardians used it’s soundtrack as a way to give depth to the main character, and a way to put some music that would never have been put in a Marvel film otherwise in there. All the songs from “Awesome Mix Volume 1” have been stuck in my head since I saw the film. The performances from Chris Pratt and Bradley Cooper are some of the best of the year so far. I keep saying it, Chris Pratt is going to be one of the biggest stars out there come a few years from now. He’s proved himself once again, and this movie could make him a household name alongside Robert Downey Jr. Hopefully it will, he deserves it. Bradley Cooper was also perfect as Rocket Raccoon. Every line he said had some of the best delivery in the film. Finally, the visuals of the movie were spectacular as well. It has to be the best looking Marvel film out there right now. The space shots were all beautiful looking. Really, just in every way, James Gunn absolutely nailed every aspect of this film. This is definitely worth watching, and it’s a wildly original space opera. I can’t recommend it enough.
